SPELL BOUND

SPELL BOUND | Rachel Hawkins
Hyperion
Hardcover/327pp.
Hailed as “impossible to put down,” the Hex Hall series has both critics and teens cheering. With a winning combination of romance, action, magic and humor, this third volume will leave readers enchanted.
Just as Sophie Mercer has come to accept her extraordinary magical powers as a demon, the Prodigium Council strips them away. Now Sophie is defenseless, alone, and at the mercy of her sworn enemies—the Brannicks, a family of warrior women who hunt down the Prodigium. Or at least that’s what Sophie thinks, until she makes a surprising discovery. The Brannicks know an epic war is coming, and they believe Sophie is the only one powerful enough to stop the world from ending. But without her magic, Sophie isn’t as confident.
Sophie’s bound for one hell of a ride—can she get her powers back before it’s too late?
I remember March 2010. I was at the Great Wolf Lodge for the weekend (my sister’s birthday) and I was bored out of mind (I hate indoor swim parks. ick.) There was a gift shop with a Starbucks in the lobby, and I spent a few hours out of every day there. I was flipping through some super girly magazine, and I saw Rachel Hawkins’ HEX HALL. That book looked damn good, and I was still on a supernatural craze, so I immediately ordered it. I read that book and fell in love, and every Easter-time since, I’ve had a Hawkins book to spend afternoons on the porch swing with. When I first read HEX HALL I was completely enthralled by Sophie and her hilarious voice, and the vivid descriptions of the school and the island, and just the overall dual love story—Sophie and her friends, Sophie and her parents, Sophie and The Two Hot Guys.

I’m always sad to see series  I love come to an end, so I did put off reading SPELL BOUND for a month (and, I must admit, the slush pile has kept me busy). I was scared to say goodbye to Sophie & Co., but I knew Hawkins wouldn’t let me down, so I started. And I couldn’t stop. I read SPELL BOUND in two sittings, and I was equally captivated through both.

If you haven’t read this awesome trilogy, WHAT THE FU I highly recommend it. If you have read HEX HALL and DEMONGLASS, but are nervous about SPELL BOUND, don’t be. It’s an excellent conclusion to an excellent story, and I can’t wait to see what Hawkins puts out in the future.

PS. I GET TO MEET RACHEL IN A FEW WEEKS AT THE SOUTHERN FESTIVAL OF BOOKS. I KNOW YOU’RE JEALOUS! I’M JEALOUS OF MYSELF, AND I DON’T EVEN KNOW HOW THAT’S POSSIBLE.

I still have to read this book! I always put off reading last books of series, too. It's sad to see stories come to an end.

On another note, an indoor swim park? LoL must be a northern thing ...

It's in Ohio, right next to King's Island. Very popular in the winter.

Sophie's voice was what really drew me into the series and what kept me reading even when frustrated (I hate Archer so much). I will be reading this soon and hopefully will be satisfied with the wrap-up.

Lucky you-getting to meet Rachel Hawkins. Have a fantabulous time!
